Unfortunately I never got to the root of it. They are all running windows 7 professional (32 and 64 bit versions) and of course IE9 or IE10. Upgrading to IE9 may be resetting them to default. What perplexes us is that, IE9 makes no changes to how files are accessed then why would querying of file attributes fail.
