All you have to do is tell it where your library is, where you want the exported files to go, and the system will do the rest. I usually just drag the photos onto a folder.

Could you provide a more detailed explanation of what went wrong – perhaps the version of iPhoto, and any special characters maybe in the events that didn't export?
