I have been trying to get to the bottom of this for the last month or so and even complained to Apple and have had no real explanation of what the iTunes should say it detects an iPod in restore mode, and your only option will be to restore (shift or option click to select 1.1.1 firmware). After that I tried to restore, and its working!!! Ipod1 1_3.1.3_7e18_restore.ipsw Download I suggest you try to download the " IPSW iOS 9.3.3 " file and try a restore via iTunes by pressing Shift (Windows).

The phone is only 4 months old and just out of my 3 month warranty (go figure). lastly used a hair blower until my device was very hot and tried restoring and no results. Tried it a different way. Unknown Error -54 Itunes What I did was to leave the iPod connected, restarted itunes, which recognized it to be in recovery mode and I just tried the 1.1.3 firmware again and it upgraded.
